Sannicola - Il paese che canta
directed by Fanny Bortone and Ottavia Farchi
presented to Società Geografica Italiana, Ionian University Corfù
con APS - Giovani Cantori
The visual narrative is born from participatory research conducted with the women and men of Sannicola, in the lower Salento region, where the devotional rites of Lenten begging remain a vital part of daily life and are transmitted outside of institutional frameworks. By following the living material of song—voices, pauses, paths, thresholds, and conflicts—the documentary interrogates what remains off-screen: the origins of repertoires, entrusted to orality and therefore inevitably plural; the inclusions and exclusions in the public space of song; and, more generally, what it means to sing—but also to live and remain—in a Southern Italian community that refuses to conform to folkloric and aestheticized imagery.
